State Parks
Great Road Trip Destinations

If your road trip takes you near a State Park, the ones I've listed below are wonderful places to stay. One tip on parks, go in their off season, late winter - early spring, late fall. You'll avoid the crowds, the cabin and lodge rates are generally cheaper, and there's still plenty of things to see and do.

I'm NOT an outdoor kinda person... I do not want to camp. I want a nice bed, a clean bathroom, and no wild critters where I sleep. Most state parks have very nice lodges and cabins, and many of them are quite reasonably priced. So if you're like me and never really considered a park as a road trip destination, give them a chance... I really do love the parks now that I never have to actually camp there!

Parks I've been to:

Breaks Interstate Park
I can't say enough about this wonderful place. The views are spectacular, the staff is very friendly, the food at the lodge is good and reasonably priced, the lodge rooms, while not fancy, are comfortable and inexpensive. Go in the spring when everything is in bloom, or right before Christmas for the decorations. Breaks is truely in the middle of no-where... but it is worth the trip.
Located on the border of Virginia and Kentucky.

Jenny Wiley - Kentucky
Jenny Wiley is a great place. Stay in the two bedroom cabins not the one bedroom ones. Lots of trails and and nice lake. The lodge restaurant is reasonable, but not the greatest food. The two bedroom cabins have full kitchens. If you have any walking/climbing problems be sure to mention it when you reserve a cabin, a few of them are perched down the side of the hills and you need to be able to climb a lot of stairs to get to them.
Located in southeastern Kentucky

Natural Bridge Park Beautiful lodge, great views. If you are not a hiker and climber, you won't enjoy the trails here. They have lots of really nice cabins, and a large waterpark area.
Located east central Kentucky.

Zion National Park
ok, it's not a state park... but Zion is such a beautiful place I couldn't leave it off my list. It's about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas, you can do it in a day trip if you want. Zion is breathtakingly beautiful. You can camp in the park or stay in one of the little motels right outside the park. Any time of year is good, do not forget your camera!
